UEFA PRO level license coach and Master in Physical Education, José Manuel Martins Teixeira Gomes, known as José Gomes in the world of football, was born in Matosinhos on August 28, 1970, and is a Portuguese Headcoach who made his senior professional debut in 1996. His highly successful career of more than two decades has driven him through the Portuguese and International football.

After having worked in Valadares FC, where he had his first experience as a coach, he made it into a first league club, FC Paços de Ferreira, as Assistant Coach. The following two years José Gomes followed António Jesus in Sporting Clube da Covilhã. In 1998 he prompltly moved to Gil Vicente FC and won the II League Championship. A year later he joined FC Paços de Ferreira once again.

Just one year after joining FC Paços de Ferreira, he was invited to move to SL Benfica where he worked with some of the most prominent figures of worldwide football, Toni, Jesualdo Ferreira, José António Camacho and Fernando Chalana.

In 2003, following a proposal from FC Paços de Ferreira, José Gomes became the youngest headcoach at the time, accompanied by Fernando Chalana, as his Assistant coach. From 2003 until 2007, he worked in CD Aves, Leixões SC, UD Leiria and Moreirense FC. In 2008 he was again invited by one of the biggest clubs in Portugal, FC Porto, where he worked with Jesualdo Ferreira.

In 2008/ 2009 José Gomes celebrated his most unforgettable milestone victory in FC Porto, as the winner of both the Portuguese I League and the Portuguese Cup. In the following year, he also won the Cup of Portugal and the Super Cup.

After the successful seasons in FC Porto, his reputation led him to new challenges abroad. He moved to Spain to join Málaga and later on he worked in the well-known Panathinaikos in Greece. Radamel Falcão, Lisandro Lopez and Lucho Gonzalez, Helton, Simão, Drulovic, Nuno Gomes, Duda, Eliseu, Hulk, Rondon, Cissé, Luís Garcia or Marco Caneira are some of the most famous football players who have witnessed the strength of his character and the quality of his work.

In January 2013, he took over the command of Videoton in Hungary, where he is currently working, and received the Year’s Best Headcoach Award.

At Al-Taawon,  between September 2014 and May 2016, he accomplished one of the best jobs, crowned with a fourth place finish in the Saudi championship and the qualification for the Asian Champions League, unprecedented feats in club history of Buraidah. A few days later, José Gomes moved to  Al-Ahli and  won the Saudi Supercup, in Fulham, London.

José Gomes returned to Portugal in June 2018 to train Rio Ave, in the Portuguese I  League, and achieved good results, which contributed to be in the top 5 of the classification. After seven months, he signed with Reading, and fulfilled his dream of working in English football. After 10 months and a great job with Royals, José Gomes became Marítimo’s coach, again in Portugal´s main League, With him, the team from Madeira´s Island will continue to play in portuguese championship, after very good results like 2-0 against Benfica. 

Only few days after the last match in Liga NOS, José Gomes returned to Spain and signed a contract with Almería. He did a good job at the Andalusian club, highly praised by personalities like Julen Lopetegui. In August 2021, he accepted the invitation to return to Al-Taawon.

In June 2022 Gomes signed for a new challenge in Ponferradina facing la liga 2 which he is already familiar with.

After his time in Spain, José Gomes took on new roles, and went back to a familiar scenario as he became Maritimo’s coach, again. As the season finished, José Gomes joined Desportivo de Chaves before making a move to Zamalek SC, one of Egypt’s most prestigious clubs, where he currently serves as Head Coach. Under his leadership, Zamalek has already secured major African titles, including the CAF Confederation Cup and the CAF Super Cup.
